Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

2,2,4-trimethylpentanediol (TMPD) has shown to be rapidly biodegraded based upon the results of two ready biodegradation studies. Biodegradation based upon DOC loss (OECD 301A) showed 99 and 100% loss within 28 days. In the second study based upon CO2 evolution, 87.8% loss was exhibited within 28 days. A wastewater treatment plant simulation study using a Semi-Continuous Activated Sludge (SCAS) Removability Test methodology exhibited a mean daily removal of 101% utilizing acclimated wastewater microorganisms. Based upon these results, TMPD is expected to be rapidly and ultimately biodegradable in the environment. Because of this degree of rapid biodegradation, hydrolysis and photodegradation (abiotic degradation) have not been evaluated.

An experimental log Kow of 1.25 has been determined for TMPD. Based upon this relatively low value bioconcentration/bioaccumulation is not anticipated and a BCF study was not conducted or proposed. Similarly the low log Kow value suggests that there is a low potential for sorption to soils and sediments. Therefore a adsorption/desorption study has also been waived.
