Description of key information

One reliable study was available in mice for the dermal route of exposure (Klimisch 2).
No substance related effects were seen and as a consequence, no NOAEL was identified in this study.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the available data and the criteria of the CLP Regulation, propylene carbonate should not be classified for carcinogenicity.

Additional information

Garman (1990) investigated the carcinogenic potential of the test substance applied to the dorsal skin of mice two times a week for up to 104 weeks at a dose of 50 µL/application of a 100% concentration. The only statistically significant differences pointed out in the study report between the untreated mice and the treated mice was a reduction in body weight for the rats treated with the test substance. The treated skin remained clinically normal for the majority of mice in the test substance group and no treatment area skin tumors were seen in any of the mice. No NOAEL was identified as the only tested dose did no demonstrate tumor formation.
