Description of key information

The toxicity to microorganisms of (-)-beta-pinene was determined in a read-across approach.
A respiration inhibition study was performed to assess the effect of delta-3-carene on STP microorganisms according to OECD guideline No 209.
The 3h-EC50 of delta-3-carene for inhibition of respiration of activated sludge is 326 mg/L.
The 3h-EC10 of delta-3-carene for inhibition of respiration of activated sludge is 38 mg/L.
Therefore, delta-3-carene is considered harmful to activated sludge.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
326 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
38 mg/L

Additional information

The toxicity to microorganisms of (-)-beta-pinene was determined in a read-across approach.

Key study conducted on delta-3 -carene according to OECD 209 Guideline under GLP without deviation.

Delta-3-carene was tested at nominal concentrations of 0 (control), 17.3, 34.6, 69.1, 138.2, 276.5, 553 mg/L and the inoculum (microbial source) was activated sludge of a predominantly domestic sewage.

The validity criteria were fulfilled and the observed 3h-EC50 and 3h-EC10 values can be used for chemical safety assessment.
