Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

1,4-dioxane (123-91-1) is with high probability acutely not harmful for aquatic algae.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for marine water algae:
1 000 mg/L

Additional information

The toxicity of the substance to Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata was tested according to OECD Guideline 201. In this GLP study the 72-h ErC50 value was determined to be > 1000 mg/L. The corresponding 72-h NOErC was determined to be 1000 mg/L (published, J-Check database, Japan, 1996). In addition, two non-GLP tests, conducted according to ISO 8692 with a Scenedesmus quadricauda as a test specie are also available for 1,4-dioxane. In both test the TTC (toxic threshold concentration) which is equivalent to ErC5 was determined. The 8-d ErC5 were determined to be 5600 mg/L (Bringmann&Kühn, 1977) and 575 mg/L (Bringmann&Kühn, 1978)

Therefore, it can be concluded that based on the available experimental data the 1,4-dioxane (123-91-1) is with high probability acutely not harmful for aquatic algae.
