Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Diphenyl ether showed an EC50 > 100 mg/L for activated sludge respiration inhibition (OECD 209).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
100 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
100 mg/L

Additional information

The potential effect of Diphenyl Ether on activated sludge microorganisms maintained in an aerobic environment was assessed by the Activated Sludge Respiration Inhibition Test Method (OCSPP Guideline 850.3300 and OECD Guideline 209). An inhibitory dose response effect was not observed for the treatment group spiked with diphenyl ether. The EC50 value for diphenyl ether is greater than 100 mg/L, the highest concentration tested. The abiotic treatment mixture dosed with 50 mg/L of Diphenyl Ether had a respiration rate of -0.6 mg O2/L/hr showing there was no significant uptake or release of oxygen resulting from abiotic reactions of the test substance.
