Description of key information

No studies on repeat exposure to Be metal exists.  The publications referenced (three studies reliable) in this section are relevant due to long post-exposure observation period. These were included as they demonstrated the Be is very persistent in lung following inhalation.

Although there are no true repeated dose studies available, the studies summarized under 7.5.3 are of relevance due to the persistence of Be in the lung following a single inhalation exposure. Accordingly, there will be continued exposure following an acute exposure event. Based on limited evidence, rats seem more susceptible as there were deaths obsserved in the inhalation study by Haley et al 1990. The effects seen in the rat lung were also more severe than observed in mice. Common observations for all studies were long persistence of Be in the lung, inflammation (granuloma commonly observed) and fibrosis. The latter effects were both dependent on species and time following exposure.
