Skin irritation:
Supporting data from tests with laboratory animals and human subjects indicating that styrene oxide is capable of causing moderate skin irritation are available. In terms of animal welfare,it is considered appropriate to classify styrene oxide as skin irritant. Corrosive properties can be precluded. Therefore, further in-vivo testing for skin irritation is not appropriate according to REACH VO Annex VIII, 8.1.1 Column 2.
Eye irritation:
In a primary eye irritation study similar to OECD Guideline 405, 0.1 mL of 1,2-epoxyethylbenzene (styrene oxide) was instilled into the conjunctival sac of three Japanese White rabbits. Animals then were observed for 21 days. Irritation was scored by the method of Draize. Styrene oxide was classified as moderate to severe irritant as it provoked corneal involvement or irritation that persisted for more than 24 hours but recovers within 21 days after treatment.

Justification for classification or non-classification
Skin irritation:
Supporting data from tests with laboratory animals and human subjects indicating that styrene oxide is capable of causing moderate skin irritation are available. Corrosive properties can be precluded. In terms of animal welfare, it is considered appropriate to classify styrene oxide as skin irritant according to Directive 67/548/EEC and GHS Regulation EC No 1272/2008. Labelling is required accordingly.
Eye irritation:
Styrene oxide is considered to be irritating to the rabbit eye. According to Directive 67/548 EEC as well as GHS Regulation EC No 1272/2008, styrene oxide has to be classified as irritating to eye and needs to be labelled accordingly.
For eye irritation styrene oxide is subject to legal binding classification.
