Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

For risk assessment of ammonium bicarbonate the total topic of ammonia toxicity was regarded. Species mean chronic values (SMCV), as given by U.S. EPA (1999) were considered as relevant endpoints. The lowest species mean chronic value (EC10, adjusted to pH 8 and 25°C) was 0.66 mg N/L = 3.7 mg/L Ammonium hydrogencarbonate for Hyalella azteca (Borgmann 1994). The adjusted species mean chronic values at pH = 8 and 25 °C for reproduction tests in Daphnia magna and Ceriodaphnia dubia are:

-Daphnia magna: adjusted species mean EC20 = 12.3 mg N/l i.e. 69.4 mg/l ammonium hydrogencarbonate

-Ceriodaphnia dubia: adjusted species mean EC20 = 13.5 mg N/l i.e. 76.2 mg/l ammonium hydrogencarbonate

Conclusion:

The EC10 of 3.7 mg/L for Hyalella azteca represents the most sensitive species mean chronic value for the assessment of chronic toxicity of ammonium to aquatic organisms and has consequently been used for the derivation of PNEC freshwater.
