Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Key value was selected from Blom study and the Seeland publication showing the lowest available effect concentration.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
75 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
1.18 mg/L

Additional information

Three freshwater tests with two different green algae species are available. Key values for the chemical safety assessment are selected from both OECD 201 guideline studies as the acute effect value is calculated in the Blom study only while the publication of Seeland shows the lower EC10 effect concentration. The third study is disregarded for the safety assessment as the reliability could not be evaluated due to deficiencies in the available reporting.

In the public domain the following was identified:

Gatidou et al (2019) investigated the inhibition effect on growth of Chlorella sorokiniana caused be exposure to 1H-Benzotriazole. Based on the observations an EC50 of 8.3 mg/L was calculated. In addition, the elimination of the substance over a 16-days period in the microalgae test was examined. BTA was significantly removed (DT50 6.5 ± 0.6 days) in the test. As main mechanism photodegradation was proposed.
