Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In a short term respiration test with activated industrial sludge an EC20 value > 100 mg/L was measured [BASF AG, 1978]. In this study, the test solution was not buffered, resulting in low pH in the test solution. Aqueous solutions of calcium propionate do not display significant changes in pH and are less toxic to aquatic microorganisms. For calcium propionate the EC20 value for respiration inhibition of activated domestic sludge was determined to range between 500 and 1040 mg/L [BASF AG, 1989].

Additional information on the toxicity to microorganisms are available from growth inhibition tests with Pseudomonas putida. The 17 h EC50 values for the cell growth inhibition of Pseudomonas putida differed between 59.6 mg/L for propionic acid [BASF AG, 1987] and 506.02 mg/L for calcium propionate [BASF AG, 1989].
