The ready biodegradability of Beta-Ionon was tested in two different test systems. In a guideline study following EEC Directive 79-831 Annex V, part C, 5.2 the O2 consumption of domestic activated sludge was recorded during 28 days exposure to Beta-Ionon. A degradation rate of 70 – 80 % was recorded at test termination (BASF AG, 1989). Comparable results were detected by a second study using predominantly domestic sewage as inoculum. The test was set up in compliance with guideline ISO 14593 and 73 % degradation were reported for an inoculation time of 28 days (Brixham Environmental Laboratory, 2000).

Based on these studies, Beta-Ionon is assumed to be readily biodegradable.
