Additional information

Aquatic short-term toxicity of ethylparaben was investigated for three trophic levels. The available data show the toxicity levels of the substance to be in the same range for fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae. An LC50 (96h) of 15 mg/L was determined for fish. The EC (48h) for Daphnia is given as range from >10 to < 20 mg/L, here the value of 10 mg/L was used as worst case for further assessment. Testing with algae revealed an ErC50 (72h) of 37 mg/L and a NOEC of 2.1 mg/L. In accordance with Annex IX, column 2 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, long-term toxicity testing to fish and aquatic invertebrates does not need to be conducted as the Chemical Safety Assessment does not indicate a need for further investigations. The environmental exposure assessment for ethylparaben (CAS 120 -47 -8) according to Annex XI, Section 3 indicates no risk for the aquatic compartment (all RCR < 1; please refer to Chapter 9 and 10 of the Chemical Safety Report for detailed information). Thus, a long-term test with fish and aquatic invertebrates is not deemed necessary.
