Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (sensitising)
Additional information:
Migrated from Short description of key information:
Cobalt propionate will be classified as skin sensitiser according to section 3.4, annex I of regulation (EC) 1272/2008 based on animal and human data from the read-across substance cobalt chloride hexahydrate showing a similar bioaccessibility in artificial perspiration (read-across group of very short-chain carboxylate (C3), expected to dissolve/dissociate quickly in sweat and behave as inorganic Co2+ with similar bioavailability). Cobalt propionate will be classified as skin sensitiser category 1A (H317). For further information please refer to the document attached to the endpoint summary in IUCLID section 7.4 (Sensitisation) or Appendix 2 of the CSR.

Justification for selection of skin sensitisation endpoint:
Weight of evidence information

Respiratory sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no adverse effect observed (not sensitising)
Additional information:
Migrated from Short description of key information:
There is no known direct experience or information implicating this substance as occupational respiratory sensitiser.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Sensitisation

Cobalt propionate will be classified as skin sensitiser according to section 3.4, annex I of regulation (EC) 1272/2008 based on animal and human data from the read-across substance cobalt chloride hexahydrate showing a similar bioaccessibility in artificial perspiration (read-across group of very short-chain carboxylate (C3), expected to dissolve/dissociate quickly in sweat and behave as inorganic Co2+ with similar bioavailability). Cobalt propionate will be classified as skin sensitiser category 1A (H317). Thus further testing is not required, according to section 1.1.3 and 1.2, annex XI of regulation (EC) 1907/2006.

Respiratory sensitisation

There is no known direct experience or information implicating this substance as occupational respiratory sensitiser, thus classification criteria according to regulation (EC) 1272/2008 as respiratory sensitiser are not met.
