Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The test item, Pigment Red 4, was tested for the ready biological degradability in Closed Bottle Test.

The test item is non-soluble in the mineral medium. For these reasons the direct dosing of the test item into each bottle was implemented.

In this 28-day study of ready biological degradability the degradation of 0.9 % of the test item, Pigment Red 4, was attained in the end of study.

Additional information

Abiotic degradation

The substance is predicted to be stable in the environment due to the intrinsic properties of organic pigments. As the substances comprised by the Monoazo Red Pigments (C.I. Pigment Red 3, Pigment Red 4, and Pigment Orange 5) are highly insoluble in water, no studies on Abiotic degradation had been conducted. Therefore, no conclusion on abiotic degradation is possible from experimental data.

Biotic degradation

The substance is predicted to be poorly biodegradable in water as an intrinsic property of organic pigments. Very low degradation rates are expected for decomposition in surface water, sediment, and in soil.
