Justification:

Bis(3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl) peroxide undergoes immediate hydrolytical degradation in contact with water. Any possibility for exposure of aquatic organisms to bis(3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl) peroxide can therefore be excluded. Since it can be legitimately expected that bis(3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl) peroxide will not be present in the environment, PBT properties have therefore been evaluated for the identified hydrolysis products.

Two hydrolysis products were identifiable:

  • 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid (CAS no. 3302-10-1)
  • 2,4,4-trimethylpentan-1-ol (CAS no. 16325-63-6)

An additional five degradation products were detected in the hydrolysis study, but proved to be non-identifiable. Nevertheless, considering the molecular structure of the parent substance it may be assumed that also the unidentified breakdown products are smaller molecules than the parent, and more hydrophilic.

Bis(3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl) peroxide has further been demonstrated to be readily biodegradable. Any degradation products formed during hydrolysis (those identified above, but also any unidentifiable compounds) are considered to be themselves sufficiently rapidly degraded as not to require further assessment. Therefore, it can be concluded that bis(3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl) peroxide including its hydrolytical degradation products is not persistent (not P, not vP).

Any other degradation products that may be formed during hydrolysis do not require specific assessment, since they are themselves rapidly degraded.

Bis(3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl) peroxide, as assessed by the properties of its degradation products, does not have PBT properties. The parent substance will not be present in the environment due to the rapid hydrolysis; hence it is more appropriate to consider the hydrolysis products in the PBT assessment instead of the parent substance.
