Key result
Atm. press.:
982 hPa
Decomposition:
yes
Decomp. temp.:
ca. 140 °C

The test item decomposed above approx 140°C and no boiling point could be determined.

Conclusions:
Cerium trinitrate decomposes at approxt 140°C before boiling occurs.
Executive summary:

The boiling point was assessed according to OECD guideline 203 using thermal analysis (differential scanning calorimetry) in the pre-test and using capillary method in the main test.

A test item amount of 45.12 mg was heated up from 25°C to 400°C at a rate of 20°C/min.

The quantities of heat absorbed or released were measured and recorded by differential scanning calorimeter.

In the main test, two capillary runs were performed in the temperature range from 100°C to 400°C with a heating rate of 10°C/min.

These tests showed that the test item decomposed above about 140°C and no boiling could be observed.

Description of key information

In a GLP study applying the capillary method (with visual observations) in accordance with EC test method A.2, cerium trinitrate was determined to decompose above approx 140°C (Weissenfeld, 2006).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Cerium trinitrate decomposes before its boiling point.
