Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

Two ready-type and one inherent-type biodegradation studies were performed with TCPP, the results showed that TCPP is not readily biodegradeble, but the evidences supporting a conclusion of inherent biodegradability.

Additional information

Test for ready biodegradability(equivalent to OECD 301C) indicated 0% degradation occurs after 28 days incubation of the test substance with sewage sludge. Another test for ready biodegradability according to OECD 301E shows, after 28 days incubation of the test substance with sewage sludge indicated 14% degradation. Such results showed that TCPP is not readily biodegradable.

An EPA standard testing with prolonged closed bottle test appears acceptable. The test conditions were unfavorable relative to standard inherent tests such as the Zahn-Wellens test (e.g. much lower concentration of inoculums). Significant degradation was observed, and the positive result of the test supporting a conclusion of inherent biodegradability.
