Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Log Kow: -0.2 to -1.8 (Citric acid)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Trizinc dicitrate may dissociate to citrate and zinc in water. For the purposes of exposure estimation and risk characterisation, zinc and citrate are considered separately.

Log Kow is not relevant for the zinc ions.

A number of studies are available that indicate that citric acid/citrate has a low Log Kow. Secondary sources to which data could not be assigned gave values of -1.64 and -1.76. A reliable study conducted according to generally accepted scientific principles gave values in the range -1.6 to -1.8 (Kuban 1991). A reliable study conducted according to generally accepted scientific principles, ion-pair octanol water partition coefficients of -0.76±0.10 for H2A- and -0.21±0.11 for H3A were determined (Avdeef 1992). There is some variation in the results but this is not considered critical for a substance with very low Log Kow.
