Ther are no data on toxicity to terrestrial plants. However an intended use for THFA is as a plant cryoprotectant, i.e. increasing a plant‘s resistance against frost damage. Crops are sprayed under non-freezing conditions with an aqueous solution that contains 0.005 to 25% THFA. In patent literature between 0.5 and 5% THFA, or a mixture of THFA with tetrahydrofurfuryl amine and other ingredients such as surfactants or polymers, the effectiveness of THFA as an anti-frost agent has been tested with Fuchsias, Impatiens, Coleuses, peppers, common bean and tomato plants (Shin et al. 1989, Shin 1993 and Shin et al. 1994).

It has been found that a single or double application in the range 0.5 to 5% THFA (or mixtures) is effective in reducing freeze damage, protecting plant growth and increasing survival of all crops tested. Therefore this indicates that the substance is not considered to be toxic to plants in conjuction this application.

In addition, spary application of THFA has been patented for effective use against injury from stress related to exposure to polluted air (Shin et al. 1993a), salt (Shin et al. 1993b) and water deprivation (Shin et al. 1993c).
