EXPERT STATEMENT

 

A test substance is considered highly flammable when it ignites spontaneously in contact with water, or evolves a flammable gas at a minimum rate of ≥ 1 litre/kg of the substance per hour.

 

None of the components of the test substance does contain groups that might lead to ignition in contact with water and/or to the evolution of a flammable gas. Moreover the test substance was dissolved in water during the determination of the water solubility (see endpoint 4.8). It demonstrated that the test substance does not ignite spontaneously in contact with water. The test substance contains approximately 8% unknown components. It is assumed that these components do not affect the properties of the test substance.

 

In conclusion, Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate is considered ‘not highly flammable’ in contact with water.

Conclusions:
In a GLP expert statement it was concluded that the substance is not highly flammable in contact with water as the substance lacks structural alerts, is known to be soluble in water and experience in handling showed that the substance does not react with water. In accordance with Section 1 of REACH Annex XI, testing was not performed.

An exothermic effect of the test substance was observed (see the fgure below). During this effect the test substance reached a temperature of 168°C. According to the guideline, the test is positive when the sample temperature exceeds the oven temperature by 60°C during the 24 hour testing time. The result is therefore considered negative and no further testing was required. After the experiment, the test substance had turned into a yellow/brown coagulated residue. It indicated that the test substance had been molten, decomposed and/or reacted during the experiment.

The substance was determined to be “not a self-heating substance” in a GLP-compliant study performed in accordance with UN-MTC Part III Section 33 (Test N.4). Classification as a self-heating substance is not necessary according to the CLP Regulation.

The flame of the gas burner did ignite the test substance pile. The test substance melted, burned with an orange flame, and turned into a black residue. White smoke was observed. After removal of the ignition source, the flame extinguished after 11 seconds and no propagation of combustion was observed.

EXPERT STATEMENT

 

A test substance is considered pyrophoric when it ignites within five minutes of coming in contact with air.

 

None of the components of the test substance does contain groups that might lead to ignition in contact with air. Moreover the test substance was handled under normal laboratory conditions during the determination of the physico-chemical properties. It demonstrated that the test substance does not ignite in contact with air at room temperature. The test substance contains approximately 8% unknown components. It is assumed that these components do not affect the properties of the test substance.

 

In conclusion, Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate has no pyrophoric properties.
