For the assessment of the short-term toxicity of TDI-urone to aquatic freshwater organisms one reliable GLP study each conducted according to standard guidelines is available for fish, daphnia, algae, and activated sludge, respectively.

In a 96-h acute toxicity limit test with carp (OECD 203) seven carp per test group were exposed to a control (0 mg/l) and a TDI-urone concentration of 100 mg/l (actual concentration). TDI-urone did not induce visible or lethal effects in carp at 100 mg/l (NOEC).

In a limit test with Daphnia magna (OECD 202) twenty daphnia per test group (4 replicates, 5 daphnia per replicate) were exposed to both a control (0 mg/l) and a TDI-urone concentration of 100 mg/l. The total test period was 48 hours. The 48h-EC50 exceeded 100 mg/l (actual concentration). In fact, TDI-urone did not induce acute immobilisation of Daphnia magna at 100 mg/l after 48 hours of exposure (NOEC).

The freshwater algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was tested for growth inhibition by TDI-Urone according to the OECD guideline 201 limit test that was combined with a range-finding test. Six replicates of exponentially growing algal cultures were exposed to a control (0 mg/l) and a TDI-urone concentration of 100 mg/l in the limit test. Three replicates per test group were exposed to 0.10, 1.0 and 10 mg/l in the combined range-finding test. No significant reduction of growth rate or inhibition of yield was recorded after a test duration of 72 h in any of the concentrations of TDI-urone tested. The NOEC for growth rate reduction and yield inhibition is 100 mg/l.

In addition TDI-urone did not influence the respiration rate of activated sludge at a concentration up to 1,000 mg/l after a contact time of 3 hours in a test according to OECD guideline 209. Therefore, it can be concluded that TDI-urone is not toxic to wastewater (activated sludge) bacteria at a concentration of 1000 mg/l (NOEC).
