Specific details on test material used for the study:
- Name of test material (as cited in study report): TDI-Uron
- Substance type: organic
- Physical state: solid
Key result
Parameter:
sensitiveness to impact: impact energy (J)
Value:
39
Remarks on result:
not sensitive to impact using an impact energy of 40 J
Key result
Parameter:
sensitiveness to friction: friction load (N)
Value:
360
Remarks on result:
not sensitive to friction using a friction load of 360 N

Mechanical sensitivity (friction): No scorch marks on the clay plate or the wooden lag and changes in the substance were observed in all six tests. Mechanical sensitivity (shock): No scorch marks on the driving band or the underlayment and no change of the substance at any sample were observed.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
The two tests for mechanical sensitivity to friction and shock showed no explosive properties of TDI-Urone.
Executive summary:

The study was conducted according to a slightly different method than guideline A.14 and investigated the mechanical sensitivity to friction and shock of TDI-Urone. The thermal sensivity was not investigated. The results show no explosive properties of TDI-Urone as the test substance is not sensitive to shock and friction.

Endpoint:
explosiveness, other
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
supporting study
Study period:
1993-03-19 to 2006-12-12
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
test procedure in accordance with national standard methods with acceptable restrictions
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
reference to same study
Qualifier:
no guideline followed
Principles of method if other than guideline:
This test investigates explosive properties of dispersed dusty substances, i.e. maximum detonation pressure, maximum temporal pressure increase, Kst-value, lower detonation limit, minimum ignition energy.
The test apparatus consists of a closed 20 l detonation bowl. The dusty test substance is injected via air pressure (20bar high pressure) via a dust distribution element in the bowl.
Pyrotechnical electrical igniters are used. To determine the detonation property and the lower detonation limit the amount of energy for the ignition potential is 1-2kJ and 2-10kJ respectively. To determine the maximum detonation pressure and the maximum temporal pressure increase 2 igniters with a total energy of 10kJ are used.
The dust concentration is varied broadly.
No dust detonation property is defined as no observed increase in pressure in the closed test apparatus at all dust concentrations (delta p < 0.5bar).
The test is conducted 3 times; the values are calculated via the mean value.
The maximum temporal increase depends on the volume. Via the “cubic law” the Kst-Value is determined.
To determine the lower detonation limit the dust concentration is reduced stepwise until 3 consecutive tests with the same dust concentration are not ignited anymore.
GLP compliance:
not specified
Parameter:
other: More sensitive to shock than m-dinitrobenzene
Remarks on result:
not measured/tested
Parameter:
other: More sensitive to friction than m-dinitrobenzene
Remarks on result:
not measured/tested
Parameter:
other: Explosive under influence of flame
Remarks on result:
not measured/tested
Parameter:
other: Explosive (not specified)
Remarks on result:
negative (not further specified)
Remarks:
with respect to mechanical sensitivity
Interpretation of results:
Division 1.4 (substances, mixtures and articles which present no significant hazard) based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
The test substance was shown to be dust explosive. This was only true for a small particle size of the substance. TDI-Urone as such proved no explosive properties.
Executive summary:

In this study the test substance TDI-Urone was tested regarding its sensitivity to dust explosion. As this test is not adequate it is not considered to show reliably if a substance is explosive because dusts behave differenty that particles of greater size with respect to explosion.

Endpoint:
explosiveness, other
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
supporting study
Study period:
1993-03-19 to 2006-12-12
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
test procedure in accordance with national standard methods with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
no guideline followed
Principles of method if other than guideline:
This test investigates thermal behaviour of the test substance by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Two to ten mg of the test substance are heated in a platen from room temperature to a maximum of 500°C. The exothermal and endothermal heat fluxes are measured the heat turnover is quantified.
GLP compliance:
not specified
Specific details on test material used for the study:
- Name of test material (as cited in study report): TDI-Uron
- Substance type: organic
- Physical state: solid
Key result
Parameter:
other: DSC
Remarks on result:
not thermal sensitive if heated under defined confinement

An endothermal reaction was measured starting at 178°C (T onset) and reaching 185°C (T peak). The substance melts.

Only an endothermic reaction could be detected.

Interpretation of results:
non explosive
Conclusions:
Only an endothermal reaction could be measured in a differential scanning calorimetry with the test substance TDI-Urone.
Executive summary:

In this study a differential scanning calometry was performed with the test substance TDI-Urone and the thermal behaviour of the substance was elucidated. Only a endothermal reaction was observed showing that the test substance is melting. Therefore, TDI-Urone is not susceptible to thermal shock.

Description of key information

The mechanical sensitivity (shock and friction) and the thermal behaviour of the test substance according to a test method similar to guideline EU A.14 was determined.

The tests for mechanical sensitivity to friction and shock showed no explosive properties of TDI-Urone. Furthermore TDI-Urone showed only an endothermic reaction in a DSC.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

The studies were conducted according to a slightly different method compared to guideline EU A.14 and investigated the mechanical sensitivity of TDI-Urone to friction and shock. The thermal sensitivity was investigated in a differential scanning calorimetry. The results did not show explosive properties of TDI-Urone as the test substance is neither sensitive to shock and friction, nor to high temperatures.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the results TDI-Urone is considered to be not an explosive and does not have to be classified.
