Two acute studies for fish are available. For fish rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) was most sensitive with a 96h-LC50 of 102 mg/L, nominal concentration.

No valid acute studies on invertebrates and algae are available for p-Toluenesulfonamide. Read across is performed with o-Toleunesulfonamide (CAS 88 -19 -7).

The EC50 (48h) for invertebrates (Daphnia magna)

of o-Toluenesulfonamide was 210 mg/L, based on nominal concentrations.

The ErC50 for algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata)

for o-Toluenesulfonamide were 170 mg/L, based on measured concentrations.

No valid long-term studies are available for p-Toluenesulfonamide. Read across is performed with o-Toleunesulfonamide (CAS 88 -19 -7).

The long-term study with invertebrates (Daphnia magna) for o-Toleunesulfonamide gave a NOEC (21d) and EC50 (21d) for reproduction of 49 and 79 mg/L, respectively, based measured (TWA) concentrations.

The 72h-NOEC (based on growth rate) for algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata)

with o-Toleunesulfonamide was 7.7 mg/L, based on measured concentrations.

One study, valid without restrictions, is available with Chloramine T (CAS 127 -65 -1)

(Geerts, 2012). As Chloramine T is instantly converted to p-TSA in the presence of organic material, this study can be used for p-TSA as well. Toxicity to microorganisms was determined according to OECD Guideline 209 and the 3h-EC10 was found to be 14 mg/L (nominal). The 3h-EC50 was 37 mg/L (nominal). Converted to p-TSA the 3h-EC10 and and 3h-EC50 are 10.5 mg/L and 27.8 mg/L, respectively.
