Additional information

Behenyl Bottoms are characterised as Alcohols, C18-22, distillation residues. Reliable results are available for three freshwater short-term tests for fish, invertebrates and algae. The PNECfreshwater is based on a LC50 of >100 mg/L using an assessment factor of 1000. The same approach as for PNECfreshwater, but with an AF of 10000, was applied to derive the PNECmarine. The RCRs derived using this approach are only indicative limits, not true values, as they are above the limit of solubility for constituents of the Behenyl Bottoms. The PNECfreshwater for Behenyl Bottoms is a conservative, but indicative, value.

 

There was a paucity of toxicity data for sediment and soil organisms, but as the substance is unlikely to be directly or indirectly applied to these compartments and is inherently biodegradable and is low in toxicity to aquatic organisms and mammals, the PNECs for sediment and soil are waived. Experimental evidence for mammals indicates that Behenyl Bottoms is unlikely to present a hazard to mammals and birds and a PNECoral is waived.

Conclusion on classification

The test substance, Behenyl Bottoms, characterized as Alcohols, C18-22, distillation residues is of low acute toxicity to aquatic organisms with EL50s for fish, invertebrates and algae all greater than 100 mg/L. These findings do not warrant classification of Behenyl Bottoms under the new Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 on classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP) do not warrant classification under the Directive 67/518/EEC for dangerous substances and Directive 1999/45/EC for preparations (DSD/DPD).
