Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
relative self-ignition temperature (solids)
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a solid having a melting point <= 160°C
Justification for type of information:
JUSTIFICATION FOR DATA WAIVING
In accordance with column 2 of REACh Annex VII, the study does not need to be conducted for solids, if the substance has a melting point ≤ 160 °C, or if preliminary results exclude self-heating of the substance up to 400 °C.
Based on the melting point of ca 80°C (refer to IUCLID section 4.2), and the absence of exothermal reaction up to 400°C observed with DSC (refer to 4.14), testing for self-ignition can be waived. Moreover, considering the ignition failure in the flammability test, in the presence of a flame (under 4.13), self-ignition seems unlikely for the substance. Therefore no additional information is required.

Endpoint:
auto-ignition temperature (liquids)
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
supporting study
Study period:
2003-04-10
Reliability:
4 (not assignable)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
documentation insufficient for assessment
Remarks:
The method can be related to the current guideline for liquids, however the test substance is a solid. Moreover, insufficient experimental details are provided, and purity of the test substance is not stated. Therefore validation cannot be granted.
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.15 (Auto-Ignition Temperature (Liquids and Gases))
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
the test substance is a solid
GLP compliance:
no
Auto-ignition temperature:
255 °C
Atm. press.:
965 mBar

quantity of sample: 150 mg

time lag: 28 seconds

precision: +/-2.5°C

Executive summary:

The auto-ignition temperature of the test substance was measured with an apparatus complying with EU A15 guideline.

However, this method is not designed for solids. Ignition was nevertheless observed, after melting, at ca 255°C.

Description of key information

No further testing is required.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Based on low melting point, testing for relative self-ignition of solids can be waived. Moreover, the substance shows low reactivity to heating and flame.

However, the phenomenon could be experimentally observed at 255°C on the melted substance, so it should be considered that the reaction cannot be totally excluded under specific conditions.
