First-aid measures

Inhalation: In case of exposure to fumes or dust , move to fresh air, lay patient down, get medical attention if discomfort persists.

Ingestion:  Rinse mouth thoroughly. Give 200-300 ml water to drink.  Do not induce vomiting. Get medical attention if any discomfort continues.

Skin contact:

- substance is not a skin irritant and not a skin sensitizer. Use general hygiene measure for contact with the material: wash with soap and warm water.

- In case of contact with molten product, cool rapidly with water and seek immediate medical attention. Do not attempt to remove molten product from skin because skin will tear easily. Cuts or abrasions should be treated promptly with thorough cleansing of the affected area.

Eye contact: Substance is not an eye irritant. Use general measures if eye irritations occur. Do not rub eyes. Remove any contact lenses. Flush eyes thoroughly with water, taking care to rinse under eyelids. If irritation persists, continue flushing for 15 minutes, rinsing from time to time under eyelids. If discomfort continues, consult a physician.

General advice: Get medical attention if any discomfort develops. Seek medical attention for all burns, regardless how minor they may seem. Show this safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.

Notes to physician: Treat symptomatically. The effects might be delayed.

Fire-fighting measures

Material is non-flammable. Use fire fighting measures appropriate to surrounding materials.

Unusual fire & explosion hazards:  Substance is not flammable. Do not use water on molten metal: Explosion hazard could result.

Specific hazards Fire or high temperatures create: No

Extinguishing media which must not be used for safety reasons:  Do not use water or halogenated extinguishing media.

Special protective equipment for fire-fighters: Self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing must be worn in case of fire.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions in case of accidental release of fine particulate : Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid inhalation of fumes, dust.

Environmental precautions : Avoid dispersal of spilled material.

Methods for cleaning up:

-Ventilate the area thoroughly if indour.

-Collect mechanically or using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter (in case of fines ).Place in a suitable container for recycling or disposal.

-DO NOT empty into drains or waterways .

Handling and storage

Handling:

Prevent formation and spreading of dust. Provide adequate ventilation if exposure to dust is expected. Grinding , crushing, blastinfs operations may generate dusts.

Avoid contact with molten material. Do not use water on molten metal.

Avoid inhalation of dust and small particles and contact with skin and eyes. Wear suitable persone; protective equipment if required. Observe good industrial hygiene practices.

Storage: No special requirements.

Exposure controls:

Risk management measures, aiming at the protection of human health, are to be considered in cases of inhalation of powder, dust and fumes (fumes from hot processes) during production and professional uses of nickel slags. For this reason, automated and closed systems should preferably be used for industrial and professional uses of nickel slags. Process enclosures, hoods at handling points, local exhaust ventilation or other enginnering controls to keep airborn levels of containing metals below recommended expocure limits.

Occupational exposure controls: Respiratory protection In case of inadequate ventilation or risk of inhalation of dust. Use suitable respiratory equipment with particle filter (type P2) during tapping of slag. Use suitable respiratory equipment with particle filter (type P3) during abrasive blasting with slag.

Hand protection:   When material is in molten state, wear gloves to protect against thermal burns. Suitable gloves can be recommended by the glove supplier.

Eye protection: Wear dust-resistant safety goggles where there is danger of eye contact.

Skin and body protection: Wear suitable protective clothing.

Environmental exposure controls: Contain spills and prevent releases and observe national regulations on emissions.

Hygiene measures Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practices. Wash hands after

handling. Routinely wash work clothing and protective equipment to remove contaminants.

Observe any medical surveillance requirements.

Stability and reactivity

Conditions to avoid:  Contact with incompatible materials. Contact with acids will release flammable hydrogen gas.

Hazardous decomposition products: Melting at high temperatute may generate fumes of metal oxides.Grinding , crushing, blasting may generate dust.

Stability:  Substance is stable and non reactive under normal conditions of use, storage and transport.

Materials to avoid:  Strong oxidising agents. Strong acids.

Hazardous polymerisation: Hazardous polymerisation does not occur.
