First-aid measures

General information:
Take persons to a safe place. Observe self-protection for first aid. Always seek medical advice in the event of contact with this substance.
After inhalation:
Keep the patient calm. If unconscious place in stable sideways position. Protect against loss of body heat. If breathing stops, administer artificial respiration. Seek medical advice immediately and clearly identify substance.
After contact with the skin:
Remove contaminated clothes at once. Wash off with plenty of water or water and soap immediately for 10-15 minutes. In serious cases, use emergency shower immediately. Seek medical advice immediately and clearly identify substance.
After contact with the eyes:
Rinse immediately with plenty of water for 10-15 minutes. Keep eyelids well open to rinse the whole eye surface and eyelids with water. Seek medical advice immediately and clearly identify substance. Continue to bathe eyes during transport to medical practitioner.
After swallowing:
If conscious, give several small portions of water to drink. Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical advice immediately and clearly identify substance.
Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed
After inhalation: treat as early as possible using cortisone spray. Medical checks necessary up to a latency period of at least 24 hours. In the event of 1st degree burns use corticoid-externa. In the case of 2nd degree burns, use symptomatic treatment. Risk of intra-abdominal gas developing if swallowed. Risk of perforation of the stomach.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing media
Suitable extinguishing media:
alcohol-resistant foam, carbon dioxide, dry sand. Application of foam will release at least initially significant amounts of flammable and corrosive vapors. These vapors could be trapped under the foam blanket.
Extinguishing media which must not be used for safety reasons:
water, extinguishing powder, halones.
Hazardous combustion products: hydrogen chloride.
Advice for firefighters
Special protective equipment for fire fighting:
Use respiratory protection independent of recirculated air. Use tightly fitting chemical protection suit.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures
Wear personal protection equipment (see section 8). Task force: Use tightly fitting chemical protection suit. Keep unprotected persons away. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Avoid inhaling mists and vapours. Do not walk through spilled material. Ensure adequate ventilation. If material is released indicate risk of slipping.
Environmental precautions
Prevent material from entering surface waters, drains or sewers and soil. Contain any fluid that runs out using suitable material (e.g. earth). Condense gasses/vapours/mists using a directed spray of water. Retain contaminated water/extinguishing water. Dispose of in prescribed marked containers. For large amounts: Close leak if possible without risk.
Methods and material for containment and cleaning up
Do not flush away with water. For small amounts: Absorb with liquid, mainly acid binding material and dispose of according to local/state/federal regulation. Cover larger quantities by near waterless foam and take up in container. Exhaust vapours. Clean up with plenty of water.
Further information:
Eliminate all sources of ignition.Precautions for safe handling

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling
Precautions for safe handling:
Ensure adequate ventilation. Must be syphoned off in situ. Keep away from incompatible substances in accordance with section 10. Spilled substance increases risk of slipping.
Precautions against fire and explosion:
Flammable vapors may accumulate and form explosive mixtures with air in containers, process vessels, including partial, empty and uncleaned containers and vessels, or other enclosed spaces. Vapours heavier than air, therefore inflammable gas mixture may form mainly near floor. Keep away from sources of ignition and do not smoke. Take precautionary measures against electrostatic charging. Cool endangered containers with water.
Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities
Conditions for storage rooms and vessels:
Store under protective gas.
Advice for storage of incompatible materials:
not applicable.
Further information for storage:
Protect against moisture. Store in original container only. Keep container tightly closed and store in a cool, well ventilated place.
Specific end use(s):
No data are available.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Exposure limits:
Maximum airborne concentrations at the workplace:
CAS No. Material Type mg/m3 ppm Dust fract. Fibre/m3
7647-01-0 Hydrogen chloride TLV_GB 2,0 1,0
7647-01-0 Hydrogen chloride EU 8,0 5,0
Aerosol - respirable fraction 10,0
hydrogen chloride (CAS no. 7647-01-1): the short-time exposure value of the EU threshold
is 15 mg/m3 (= 10 ppm).
The aerosol limit specified is a recommendation should aerosol be formed during
processing.
Exposure limited and controlled
Exposure in the work place limited and controlled
General protection and hygiene measures:
Do not breathe vapours. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Do not eat, drink or smoke when
handling. Wash hands at the end of workand before eating.
Personal protection equipment
Respiratory protection:
gas mask filter ABEK . In case of long or strong exposure: positive pressure self contained
breathing apparatus .
Hand protection:
protective gloves made of fluorinated rubber. At any sign of decay or chemical permeability
remove gloves immediately and replace. Wear gloves for short periods only < 10 mins.
Eye protection:
tight fitting protective goggles. Where there is risk of splashing: protective shield . Provide
work station with eye bathing equipment. Do not wear
contact lenses.
Skin protection:
apron , protective clothing, face protection, neck protection , acid-proof protective clothing .
Exposure to the environment limited and controlled:
Prevent material from entering surface waters, drains or sewers and soil.
Further information for system design and engineering measures:
Observe regulations for protection against explosion.

Stability and reactivity

General information:
If stored and handled in accordance with standard industrial practices no hazardous
reactions are known.
Conditions to avoid:
moisture .
Materials to avoid:
proton-active substances. Reacts with water, basic substances, acids, alcohols,
ketones/aldehydes. Reaction causes the formation of hydrogen chloride and heat.
Hazardous decomposition products:
Under the effect of humidity, water and protic agents: hydrogen chloride.

Disposal considerations

Material:
Recommendation:
Dispose of according to regulations by incineration in a special waste incinerator. Observe
local/state/federal regulations. Ensure special chem./phys. treatment after discussion with
the supplier.
Uncleaned packaging:
Recommendation:
Completely discharge containers (no tear drops, no powder rest, scraped carefully).
Containers may be recycled or re-used. Observe local/state/federal regulations. Uncleaned
packaging should be treated with the same precautions as the material.
Waste Disposal Legislation Ref.No.(EC):
It is not possible to determine a waste code for this product in accordance with the
European Waste Catalogue (EWC) since it is only possible to classify it according to how it
is used by the customer. The waste code is to be determined within the EU in liaison with
the waste-disposal operator.
