Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

IC50 (9h) = 211 mg cobalt hydrogencitrate/L (Tetrahymena pyriformis) for growth inhibition (read-across from cobalt chloride)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Data on single-species toxicity tests resulting in high quality L(I)C50 values (expressed as Co) for microorganisms are summarised in Table 2 of the WHO CICAD document, 2006 (see attached document).

Data on growth inhibition of the protozoan species Tetrahymena pyiformis in 9 hour flask tests were used for the assessment (standard test organism). The IC50(9h) was at 50 mg cobalt/L, resulting in a calculated value of 211 mg cobalt hydrogencitrate/L.

A second study on the ciliate Spirostomum ambiguum showed LC50(24h) values of 11.8 mg cobalt/L using cobalt nitrate as salt, resulting in a value of 49.9 mg cobalt hydrogencitrate/L.
