experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
1949
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
study well documented, meets generally accepted scientific principles, acceptable for assessment
Qualifier:
no guideline followed
Principles of method if other than guideline:
- Principle of test: The solubility determinations of glutaric acid were carried out by the synthetic method described by Vold and Vold (1945) in Physical Methods of Organic Chemistry, Vol. I, Chap. IV .
- Short description of test conditions: Glutaric acid was recrystallised twice from benzene and dried under high vacuum. Weighed quantities of the acid and water were sealed in small test tubes, and the temperature was determined at which complete solution occurred while the tube was being agitated in an oil bath. The temperature of the bath was raised not more than 0.2 °C a minute and for final check results at a rate of 0.1 or 0.2 °C in 5 minutes. Most of the solution temperatures could be checked within 0.2 °C. All temperatures were measured with thermometers, graduated in 0.2 °C, which had been checked at the ice point and at the transition point of sodium sulfate.
- Parameters analysed / observed: Temperature at which complete solution occurred.

Conclusions:
The water solubility of glutaric acid is 46.7 g/100g at 3.4 °C, 70.4 g/100g at 10.4°C, 83 g/100g at 14°C, 104.1 g/100g at 18°C, 130 g/100g at 23.9°C, 159.6 g/100g at 28.3°C and 297 g/100g at 45.8°C.
Executive summary:

The water solubility of glutaric acid was determined in the study by observing the temperature at which complete solution occurred. The water solubility of the substance was found to be 46.7 g/100g at 3.4 °C, 70.4 g/100g at 10.4°C, 83 g/100g at 14°C, 104.1 g/100g at 18°C, 130 g/100g at 23.9°C, 159.6 g/100g at 28.3°C and 297 g/100g at 45.8°C.
