Results and discussion

In vivo

Irritant / corrosive response data:
HCl applied as an aqueous solution at a percentage of 10 % was classified as “Risk of serious damage to eyes” according to the 83/467/EEC criteria (mean over 24/48/72 hrs of iritis >1.5).
5 % w/w aqueous solution of Hydrochloric acid produced irritation to rabbit eyes.
Boric acid induced mild conjunctivae redness and chemosis and minor effects on the iris. The effects were reversible within 7 days. Therefore, no classification is indicated.

It can be assumed that BCl3 is corrosive to the eye because the degradation product HCl will be produced in a high concentration when BCl3 comes into contact with the water of the eye. This matches the present classification of BCl3 as corrosive.
