Experimental measuring of the removal of SO2 from the air in the presence of soil.

SO2 concentration in the air is reduced from 100 to 8 ppm in 15 minutes. Autoclaving the soil prior to experiment reduced the rate of uptake to 20 pm after 15 minutes. These results indicate that the major portion of SO2 in the air is removed by some chemical reaction, however, the microbial contribution cannot be entirely excluded. It is calculated that 4x1010 of SO2 is removed every year in the United States
