Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Waiving of study:
Benzyl alcohol neither considered to be spontaneously flammable in contact with air (pyrophoric) nor in contact with water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

Pyrophoric properties:

The chemical structure of benzyl alcohol indicates that there are no groups associated with pyrophoric properties. The test substance does not contain any chemical group that might lead to spontaneous ignition shortly after contact with air at room temperature. Hence benzyl alcohol does not belong to the type of substances that exhibit pyrophoric properties as listed in the REACH "Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment", Chapter R.7.1.10, Table R.7.1-27.

Flammability in contact with water:

The chemical structure of benzyl alcohol indicates that there are no groups associated with flammability properties upon contact with water. Further experience in handling and use does not indicate flammability properties of benzyl alcohol upon contact with water. The test substance is not considered to be highly flammable.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the structure of the molecule and taking into account the provisions laid down in Council Directive 67/548/EEC and CLP (1272/2008/EC), benzyl alcohol is not classified with respect to flammability.
