Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The hazard assessment is based on the data currently available. New studies with the registered substance and/or other member substances of the glycol esters category will be conducted in the future. The finalised studies will be included in the technical dossier as soon as they become available and the hazard assessment will be re-evaluated accordingly.

For further details, please refer to the category concept document attached to the category object (linked under IUCLID section 0.2) showing an overview of the strategy for all substances within the glycol esters category.

No experimental data are available, testing the toxicity of propylene dinonanoate (CAS 41395-83-9) towards algae. Therefore, read-across to the structurally related source substances decanoic acid, mixed diesters with octanoic acid and propylene glycol (CAS 68583-51-7) and butylene glycol dicaprylate / dicaprate (CAS 853947-59-8) was performed in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5. The source substances are characterized by similar fatty acid chain lengths as well as alcohol components and are therefore considered suitable representatives for the assessment of the toxicity of the target substance to algae.

All available studies with the source substances were performed according to appropriate EU guidelines and GLP.

One experimental study investigating the toxicity of the source substance decanoic acid, mixed diesters with octanoic acid and propylene glycol (CAS 68583-51-7) to aquatic algae is available (1995). The study was performed according to the EU Method C.3 under GLP conditions. The green algae Scenedesmus subspicatus was exposed to a Water Accommodated Fraction (WAF) of nominal 5.3 mg/L and subsequent dilutions for 72 h. No effects on the growth rate of S. subspicatus up to the limit of water solubility were observed resulting in an ErL50 (72 h) > 5.3 mg/L and a NOELR (72 h) of ≥ 5.3 mg/L (nominal, WAF).

Further experimental data are available for the source substance butylene glycol dicaprylate / dicaprate (CAS 853947-59-8). The available study was conducted according to the EU Method C.3 and GLP (1997). Desmodesmus subspicatus was exposed for 72 h to a single test item loading rate of 1000 mg/L (WAF) and a control. The substance was analytically monitored by TOC measurements. The concentration of the stock solution was 3.3 mg/L (0 h) based on the TOC content. The recovery rate in the stability test was > 80% and the concentration after 48 and 72 h did not differ > 20%. Therefore, the test substance was bioavailable throughout the test. The test showed no toxicity effects resulting into an ErC50 (72 h) > 3 mg/L and a NOEC (72 h) ≥ 3 mg/L (meas. initial).

Based on the results from the structurally related read-across substances, it can be concluded that propylene dinonanoate (CAS 41395-83-9) will not cause acute or chronic effects to algae up to the limit of the water solubility.
