Description of key information

No toxic effects up to the limit of water solubility (< 1 mg/L) for Danio rerio (ISO/DIS 10229-1), read-across .

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

As no valid study is available for assessing the chronic toxicity to fish of Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, 2-ethylhexylesters (CAS No. 68334-05-4), in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 Grouping of substances, a read-across to the structurally related substance Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, hydrogenated (CAS No. 68783-41-5) was conducted. The read across is justified due to a) the structural similarity of the substances and b) similar physico-chemical properties resulting in a similar environmental fate and ecotoxicity profile. Further justification is given within the endpoint summary 6.1 and within the category justification section 13.

The study with Fatty acids, C18-unsatd., dimers, hydrogenated (CAS No. 68783-41-5) was performed according to ISO/DIS 10229-1. During the 28-day long-term toxicity study with the freshwater fish Danio rerio (Marshall, 1994) no effects on the average fish weight at the concentrations tested (0.2 and 1.0 mg/L) were observed and a NOEC of ≥ 0.85 mg/L (measured concentration) was determined. Thus, no effects up to the limit of the water solubility (< 0.52 mg/L) of the tested substance were observed.

Thus, based on the above mentioned results, and due to the structural similarities and a consistent ecotoxicological/environmental fate profile of the substances, as are explained with in the overall endpoint summary in IUCLID chapter 6.1, it can be concluded that no chronic toxicity to fish is expected for Fatty acids, C18 -unsatd., dimers, hydrogenated (CAS No. 68783 -41 -5).
