In this study for sensory irritation, 6 groups of 4 male Swiss Weber mice were exposed to BHT concentrations of 4.54, 16, 32, 42.9, 66.6 and 82.6 ml/m3 (head only exposure) for 30 minutes. The RD50 was calculated to be 59.7 ml/m3 (about 546 mg/m3). No indication of sensory irritations was observed at concentrations of 4.54 and 16 ml/m3 (about 41 and 146 mg/m3, respectively). The RD50 of 3.6 ml/m3 (Stadler and Lavoie 1997) reported in an earlier study by DuPont was thus not substantiated; the discrepancy was explained by problems in the analysis (recovery) in the DuPont study (US Consumer Product Safety Commission 1998).
