Based on the use pattern, terrestrial organisms are not considered to be at risk and therefore in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex IX, further laboratory testing with terrestrial organisms is not needed as the chemical safety assessment indicates no risk to the terrestrial environment.

 

Furthermore, although effects can be observed in some laboratory studies with soil-dwelling organisms, the lowest concentrations at which they have been found to occur are well below natural background concentrations (5% dry weight in soil). Soil organisms are adapted to background concentrations and laboratory test data indicating effects at concentrations below background therefore have no practical significance for setting PNECs.

 

Anoxic and low pH conditions in sediments may result higher concentrations of the more toxic ferrous iron species but such conditions are only conducive to supporting specialist species. Testing of species that are adapted to conditions of low pH and anoxia might be justified but only to investigate specific exposure scenarios.
