Description of key information

An acute daphnia test is not available for iron however, conclusions can be drawn from the 21-day reproduction test provided, a conservative estimate of the 48-hour EC50 would be >18 mg/L.

The following results were obtained during the conduct of the 21-day Daphnia reproduction test

Based on the data presented above an acute 48 -h EC50 for Fe would be >18 mg/L based on nominal concentrations. In addition the reproduction test refers to an acute preliminary test that was used for selection of the definitive test concentration range, the publication indicates that this preliminary test provided a NOEC of 10 mg/L. An acute Daphnia test conducted with nitrate provided an EC50 of 1430 mg/L.

Based on these results iron is considered to be more toxic to invertebrates than nitrate and therefore controlling risks associated with iron will also protect for nitrate exposure.
