Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

It can be concluded that the iron cation is the most toxic component of iron trinitrate and therefore the NOEC of 0.24 mg Fe/L will be used for inter-species comparisons.

Additional information

Long term studies with fresh water fish have been conducted with iron hydroxide and nitrate.

The effects of ferric hydrochloride on survival, growth, and hatchability of Pimephales promelas were assessed over a 12 month period. The 12 month NOEC was 0.24 mg/L (control) and the corresponding LOEC was 1.5 mg/L, expressed as nominal Fe concentration. These concentrations significantly exceed the solubility of iron under normal environmental conditions and effects arising from undissolved ferric hydroxide could have occurred. Quoting a NOEC as the control/background Fe concentration as the NOEC is potentially misleading and this value should be treated as a conservative estimate.

A 146 day chronic toxicity test was carried out to determine the effects of nitrate (NO3) on Lake Trout (Salvellinus namaycush). Based on nominal exposure concentrations the lowest 146-day NOEC was found to be 1.6 mg/L NO3-N for both average fry weight and developmental delay. This equates to approximately 7.1 mg/L NO3. The lowest LOEC was found to be 6.25 mg/L NO3-N, also for average fry weight and developmental delay. This equates to 27.65 mg/L NO3.

It can be concluded that the iron cation is the most toxic component of iron trinitrate and therefore the NOEC of 0.24 mg Fe/L will be used for inter-species comparisons, this value should be treated as a conservative estimate.
