Description of key information

- According to column 2 of REACH Annex IX, the study does not need to be conducted since tartaric acid and its salts are not toxic to fish.

- Predicted long term toxiciy to fish (FISH 30-d ChV) for tartaric acid is 43.141 g/L. Even if the predictions were performed on tartaric acid it is valid also for calcium tartrate, since:the properties and toxicity of a small number of organic salts (like Ca) are well documented in the environmental literature

  1. Simple salts (like calcium tartate) can be entered into the system and modeled by neutralizing the compounds (remove the salt, replace with a hydrogen atom) as the salts are typically treated as spectator ions
  2. we can consider compounds and dissociation at environmental conditions
  3. logKow for calcium tartrate and tartaric acid are similar (-1.46 vs -1.002)
  4. moreover, since logKow of calcium tartrate is lowest than logKow o tartaric acid, the estimated toxicity is too conservative.

-The requirement to present data for endpoints on fish early life stage toxicity test, fish short term toxicity test on embryo and sac-fry, and fish juvenile growth test is not proposed by the registrant.
