Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Tests compliant or similar to guideline-studies on the bioconcentration of chloroform are available for different species of freshwater fish.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

BCF (aquatic species):
13

Additional information

All tests were carried out in flow-through systems exposing fish to concentrations of 0.1 to 1 mg/L. The results of the Japanese bioconcentration study (MITI 1992) carried out in accordance with the OECD guideline No. 305 indicate low bioconcentration of chloroform after 42 days, and the bioconcentration factors are between 1.4 and 13. The test carried out by Anderson and Lustry (1980) with four species of freshwater fish had much shorter exposure times. Equilibrium was reached in three out of four species and bioconcentration factors were similar to those of the Japanese study: 1.6 to 10.4. These tests also demonstrated that quick depuration can be expected to take place within 24 hours after cease of exposure.

In conclusion, the highest bioconcentration factor for freshwater fish is 13, which will be considered in the risk assessment.
