Additional information

The effects of peracetic acid 15% on the metabolic activity of soil micro-organisms were determined in two 28-day laboratory studies determine the carbon transformation according to the OECD Guideline 217 and the nitrogen transformation according to the OECD Guideline 216 (Scheerbaum, 2008). The results revealed that peracetic acid 15% had stimulating effects on the soil respiration rates, with one exception: at the start of the experiment (day 0) an inhibition at the highest concentration tested was observed. The stimulating effects are due to the liberation of acetic acid from peracetic acid, which might serve as food base for the micro-organisms thus stimulating their growth. The resulting EC50 (28 d) was found to be >933.6 mg/kg dw.


 


The second test showed that the nitrate formation rates at the highest test concentration of 933.6 mg/kg dw were significantly lowered on days 7, 14 and 28. At the concentration 295.2 mg/kg dw effects > 25% were observed on day 7, whereas no inhibition effects were observed at all other concentrations of the test substance. Thus, the EC50 (28 d) was determined to be >933.3 mg/kg dw.
