A complex combination of hydrocarbons obtained from the distillation of crude oil or natural gasoline. It consists predominantly of saturated hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly in the range of C9 through C12 and boiling in the range of approximately 140°C to 220°C (284°F to 428°F).
aquatic toxicity was estimated using the PETROTOX computer model, which
combines a partitioning model (used to calculate the aqueous
concentration of hydrocarbon components as a function of substance
loading) with the Target Lipid Model (used to calculate acute and
chronic toxicity of non-polar narcotic chemicals). PETROTOX computes
toxicity based on the summation of the aqueous-phase concentrations of
hydrocarbon block(s) that represent a petroleum substance and
membrane-water partition coefficients (Kmw) that describe the
partitioning of the hydrocarbons between the water and organism. The
estimated 72-hour LL50 value for Tetrahymena pyriformis, one of
the most sensitive microorganism species, is 677.9 mg/L
et al., 2010b).
