Ceramic Articles Directive - Lead and Cadmium Migration Limits

EU. Lead and Cadmium Migration Limits in Ceramic FCMs, Directive 84/500/EEC, 20 October 1984, as amended by Directive 2005/31/EC, 30 April 2005

This list contains migration limits for the substances lead and cadmium used in the manufacture of ceramic articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs pursuant to Directive 84//500/EEC. For a ceramic article to be recognized as satisfying the Directive's requirements, quantities of lead and/or cadmium extracted during the test carried out under the conditions laid down in Annexes I and II of the Directive must not exceed the limits provided.

Notes
1 Where a ceramic article consists of a vessel fitted with a ceramic lid, the lead and/or cadmium limit which may not be exceeded (mg/dm2 or mg/litre) shall be that which applies to the vessel alone.

2 Where a ceramic article does not exceed the quantities by more than 50 %, that article shall be recognized as satisfying the requirements of this Directive if at least 3 other articles with the same shape, dimensions, decoration and glaze are subjected to a test under the conditions laid down in Annexes I and II and the average quantities of lead and/or cadmium extracted from those articles do not exceed the limits set, with none of those articles exceeding those limits by more than 50 %.
