First-aid measures

Description of first aid measures

Remove contaminated clothing. First aid personnel should pay attention to their own safety.

If inhaled:

Keep patient calm, remove to fresh air, seek medical attention. If breathing difficulties develop, aid in breathing and seek immediate medical attention.

On skin contact:

Immediately wash thoroughly with plenty of water, apply sterile dressings, consult a skin specialist.

On contact with eyes:

In case of contact with the eyes, rinse immediately for at least 15 minutes with plenty of water. Immediate medical attention required.

On ingestion:

Rinse mouth immediately and then drink plenty of water, induce vomiting, seek medical attention.

Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed

Symptoms: Eye irritation, respiratory disorders, dazed state, nausea, skin corrosion, headache, Further symptoms are possible

Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

Treatment: Treat according to symptoms (decontamination, vital functions), no known specific antidote.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media:

dry powder, carbon dioxide

Unsuitable extinguishing media for safety reasons:

water, foam

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

At temperatures of > 75 °C can be emitted: Diborane, toxic gases/vapours

Reacts violently with water, liberating extremely flammable gases.

Advice for fire-fighters

Special protective equipment:

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical-protective clothing.

Further information:

Collect contaminated extinguishing water separately, do not allow to reach sewage or effluent systems. Contaminated extinguishing water must be disposed of in accordance with official regulations. Sealed containers should be protected against heat as this results in pressure build-up. Vapours are heavier than air and may accumulate in low areas and travel a considerable distance up to the source of ignition.

Accidental release measures

Reacts violently with water, liberating extremely flammable gases. Release of substance/product can cause fire or explosion.

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Use personal protective clothing. Sources of ignition should be kept well clear.

Environmental precautions

Do not discharge into drains/surface waters/groundwater. Contain contaminated water/firefighting water.

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

Pick up with suitable absorbent material. Place into suitable container for disposal. Correctly dispose of recovered product immediately.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling

Avoid contact with the skin, eyes and clothing. Avoid inhalation of dusts/mists/vapours. Keep container tightly sealed. Product should be worked up in closed equipment as far as possible. Handle under dry inert gas. Protect against moisture. Protect against heat. Protect from air. Ensure adequate ventilation.

Ensure thorough ventilation of stores and work areas. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Remove contaminated clothing and protective equipment before entering eating areas. Hands and/or face should be washed before breaks and at the end of the shift. When using do not eat, drink or smoke.

Protection against fire and explosion:

Avoid all sources of ignition: heat, sparks, open flame. Take precautionary measures against static discharges. Use antistatic tools. Render equipment and apparatus inert (nitrogen, inert gases) and ground before putting into operation. Fire extinguishers should be kept handy. Sealed containers should be protected against heat as this results in pressure build-up.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Segregate from oxidants. Segregate from acids and acid forming substances.

Further information on storage conditions: Keep container tightly closed in a cool, well-ventilated place. Keep container dry. Keep under inert gas. Keep away from heat.

Storage stability:

Improper storage may result in pressure build up in the drums.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Personal protective equipment

Respiratory protection:

Respiratory protection in case of vapour/aerosol release. Combination filter for gases/vapours of organic, inorganic, acid inorganic and alkaline compounds (e.g. EN 14387 Type ABEK). Suitable respiratory protection for higher concentrations or long-term effect: Self-contained breathing apparatus.

Hand protection:

Chemical resistant protective gloves (EN 374)

Suitable materials short-term contact and/or splashes (recommended: At least protective index 2, corresponding > 30 minutes of permeation time according to EN 374)

fluoroelastomer (FKM) - 0.7 mm coating thickness

Supplementary note: The specifications are based on tests, literature data and information of glove manufacturers or are derived from similar substances by analogy. Due to many conditions (e.g. temperature) it must be considered, that the practical usage of a chemical-protective glove in practice may be much shorter than the permeation time determined through testing.

Manufacturer's directions for use should be observed because of great diversity of types.

Eye protection:

Tightly fitting safety goggles (splash goggles) (e.g. EN 166)

Body protection:

Body protection must be chosen depending on activity and possible exposure, e.g. apron, protecting boots, chemical-protection suit (according to EN 14605 in case of splashes or EN ISO 13982 in case of dust)., Protective clothing should be flame resistant.

General safety and hygiene measures

Avoid contact with the skin, eyes and clothing. Avoid inhalation of vapour. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. When using, do not eat, drink or smoke. Hands and/or face should be washed before breaks and at the end of the shift. Gloves must be inspected regularly and prior to each use. Replace if necessary (e.g. pinhole leaks). Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse. Store work clothing separately.

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity

No hazardous reactions if stored and handled as prescribed/indicated., When heated can give off ignitable vapours.

Chemical stability

The product is stable under inert gas.

Possibility of hazardous reactions

May evolve hydrogen gas.

Conditions to avoid

Avoid all sources of ignition: heat, sparks, open flame. Avoid moisture. Avoid contact with air. Avoid electro-static charge. Avoid contamination.

Incompatible materials

Substances to avoid:

strong oxidizing agents, strong acids

Hazardous decomposition products

Hazardous decomposition products:

hydrogen, Diborane, Dimethyl sulphide, Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide

boranes, sulfur oxides

Disposal considerations

Waste treatment methods

Incinerate in suitable incineration plant, observing local authority regulations.

A waste code in accordance with the European waste catalog (EWC) cannot be specified, due to dependence on the usage.

The waste code in accordance with the European waste catalog (EWC) must be specified in cooperation with disposal agency/manufacturer/authorities.

Incinerate in suitable incineration plant, observing local authority regulations.

Contaminated packaging:

Uncleaned empties should be disposed of in the same manner as the contents.
