Stoddard solvent


1.Appearance

Stoddard solvent is a colorless, refined petroleum distillate that is free from rancid or objectionable odors and that boils in a range of approximately 148.8 degree C to 204.4 degree C (300 degree F to 400 degree F)

 

 2.Odour

Smells and tastes like kerosene. 

 

3.Melting point

Stoddard solvent has a melting point at -70°C. Many references to the melting point in published literature.Using the EPI Suite Mpbwin (v.1.43) QSAR model, a Melting Point of -44.13 deg C (Weighted Value) was established.

4.Boiling point

Stoddard solvent has a Boiling point between 154°C and 202°C. Many references to the Boiling point in published literature.Using the EPI Suite Mpbwin (v.1.43) QSAR model, a Boiling Point of 164.60 deg C (estimated) was established.

 5.Specific gravity

The density of Stoddard solvent is 0.78 g/cm3 at 20 deg C for liquid solution according to the cited references( reliable data handbook data) .

 

 6.Vapour pressure

The vapour pressure of Stoddard solvent is measured at the temperature of 25 °C. The experimentally determined value for 25 °C is 534.1-600.87 Pa.A QSAR method predicts the vapour pressure of this substance to be approximately 231 Pa at 25C. 

7.Water solubility

Stoddard solvent is negligible soluble in water <0.1% by weight in water at 25 °C. Substance is predicted by QSAR method to be insoluble ( 0.091706 mg/l) in water.Interpretation of results: insoluble (< 0.1 mg/L) 

8.Partition co-efficient

The value for the partition coefficient of Stoddard solvent at 20 °C is between 3.5 and 6.4.A reliable QSAR method predicts a value for the partition co-efficient (logKow) of 5.25 for this substance. 

9.Hydrolysis as a function of pH

The chemical constituents that comprise the Stoddard solvent consist entirely of carbon and hydrogen and do not contain hydrolyzable groups. As such, they have a very low potential to hydrolyze. Therefore, this degradative process will not contribute to their removal from the environment.

 10.Adsorption/desorption

The log of the adsorption coefficient (KOC) of Stoddard solvent was estimated to be log KOC = 3.1616 which is equal to a KOC value of 1451 using the KOCWIN v2.00 QSAR method. Estimate from MCI.

The autoignition temperature of Stoddard solvent is cited to be 232 °C.

Stable under normal conditions.

17.Incompatible materials

Strong acids and oxidizing materials.

   

18.Oxidizing properties

This product no has oxidizing properties. An oxidizing substance is one that, while in itself not necessarily combustible, may cause or contribute to the combustion of other material. Oxidising substances generally act by yielding oxygen; however, those that release active halogens can also react as oxidants. Due to the absence of chemical groups associated with oxidizing properties or other structural alerts this substance is not considered to exhibit oxidizing properties.

 

19.Explosivity

Stoddard solvent do not meet EU criteria for explosivity. In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII, the explosive properties study does not need to be conducted as there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule.

20.Viscosity

The viscosity of Stoddard solvent is cited to be between 0.9 and 1.6 mm2/sec at 25 °C.

21.Dissociation constant

Study for Dissociation constant does not need to be conducted if: - The substance is insoluble in water. Expert Judgement Stoddard Solvent is insoluble in water. Therefore testing for Dissociation constant does not need to be performed. 22.Flash point

The flash point of Stoddard solvent is between 37.8 °C and 60 °C as determined with the closed cup method.
