The biodegradability of crotonaldehyde was evaluated in five different studies. Three studies report the ready biodegradability, conducted according to three different methods according to or corresponding to OECD 301, respectively. Two of them report a ready biodegradability of the substance, fulfilling the ten-day window criterion. However, both studies were conducted using methods which are not or only to a certain extend suitable for the determination of the biodegradability of volatile substances. With a vapour pressure of 40 hPa, crotonaldehyde shows a medium volatility. It is assumed that the elimination of test substance in the system over time is not related to biodegradability only. A loss of test substance due to volatility cannot be excluded. In the third study, a closed bottle design was used. Here, a ready biodegradability of crotonaldehyde could also be achieved, but the ten-day window criterion failed. However, the test was conducted in a closed system, which is the most suitable one for volatile substances. Here, it can be assumed that the elimination of the substance over time is in fact more related to biodegradability, and that an elimination based on volatility is low. Therefore, this study was regarded to be the most reliable one. Besides this, the slow biodegradability achieved here represents a worst case and for that reason, this study was selected as the key study.

In two supporting studies on inherent biodegradability, an inherent biodegradability could be shown. However, it is stated in both reports that the elimination could also be related to volatility of the substance and not only to biodegradation. Only in one study, it could be shown by BOD-determination that the test substance was in fact biodegraded.
