Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin sensitisation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (sensitising)
Additional information:

No OECD guideline studies available. Only one human study was found reliable (Curtis, 1951). This study did not demonstrate a sensitising effect of BeO while other beryllium substances were sensitising. Although the study is relatively old and with a limited cohort it clearly demonstrates a difference between BeO and the other Be salts. It should also be mentioned that the other Be salts caused "spontaneous flare-ups" in controls with no prior exposure to Be compounds while this was not observed with BeO.

Migrated from Short description of key information:
Sensitisation was not observed in beryllium workers challenged with BeO

Respiratory sensitisation
