The effects of Chlorophene (CAS120-32-1) on soil respiration and nitrification of soil microorganisms were investigated according to OECD Guidelines No. 216 and 217 (Reis, 2007). A loamy sand soil was tested. 3 replicates per treatment and concentration were compared to a control. Test concentrations were 1.9 mg a.i./kg soil and 19 mg a.i./kg soil. The carbon transformation in soil after addition of glucose was measured by determining the CO2-production over a period of up to 24 hours at day 0, 7, 14 and 29 after treatment. For the nitrogen-transformation in soil enriched with lucerne meal (concentration in soil 0.5%), NH4-, NO2- and NO3-nitrogen concentrations were determined on day 0, 7, 14, 28, 43, 56, 70 and 84 days after treatment. The variation between the replicate control samples was clearly within the validity criterion of 15% for both the carbon and nitrogen transformation test. Therefore, the test is considered to be valid. Chlorophene has no impact on respiration activities of soil microflora when applied up to 19 mg a.i./kg soil. In the soil nitrogen transformation test, chlorophene had a tolerable transient impact (deviation from control -14.38%) when applied up to 19 mg a.i./kg soil but no impact at the lower application rate of 1.9 mg/kg soil.
