Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Auto-ignition temperature:
>= 400 °C
Atm. press.:
>= 1 011.4 - <= 1 018.9 hPa

Three tests were performed, each in triplicate, varying the amount of lactic acid solution that was introduced into the auto-ignition chamber. The reported auto-ignition temperature is the lowest temperature at which auto-ignition was recorded (rounded).

Results of the preliminary test:

The estimated auto-ignition temperature was 415 °C.

Main test:

The results of the main study on the determination of the auto-ignition temperature of the test substance are given inTable 1.

Ignition of the test substance within 5 minutes after introduction was observed with each sample volume and with each test a minimum auto-ignition temperature was obtained. The maximum deviation between the three values was 20 °C. According to the guidelines, no further testing was required.

The lowest temperature at which ignition of the test substance occurred was 403 °C. This temperature was rounded off to the nearest multiple of 5 °C giving an auto-ignition temperature of the test substance of 400 °C.

Conclusions:
The auto-ignition temperature of a 93 % aqueous solution of lactic acid was determined to be ≥ 400 °C.
Executive summary:

A commercially available auto-ignition temperatures apparatus was used for the determination of the degree of auto-ignitability of lactic acid 93 % aq. The test substance is auto-ignitable with an auto-ignition temperature of 400 °C or greater at a atmospheric pressure (1011.4–1018.9 hPa).

This information is used in a read-across approach in the assessment of the target substance.

For details and justification of read-across please refer to the attached report in section 13 of IUCLID.
