Methyl acrylate does not absorb UV radiation at wavelengths > 290 nm, i.e. methyl acrylate does not directly photolyse. However, it is susceptible to photo-oxidation via vapour phase reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals and ozon.

According to Q(SAR) data using SRC AOP v1.92, MA will be slowly degraded by photochemical processes after exposure to the air reacting with the photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals and with ozone (calculated half-life for a 24-hour day and 0.5E06 OH/cm3: 40.9 hours (= 1.7 days); for a 24-hour day and 7E11 O3/cm3: 6.55 days) (BASF SE, 2008).

In a hydrolysis study conducted by BASF AG (1998), the half-life of methyl acrylate in water at pH 11 was determined to be approximately 1.8 h. Over the test period of 28 days methyl acrylate showed no significant hydrolysis at pH 3 and pH 7. 

Therefore, the substance will hydrolyse slowly in contact with water under environmental conditions.
